Trophy Wall - Copper plate etching

Trophy Wall

Semester: Spring 2023

Class: Printmaking I

My first intaglio work was pulled straight off the wall of a man cave. A wooden wall with lewd carvings in it is something I have seen in many a man-infested bait shop in the south. The process time of this piece gave me time to ruminate on my experience of these spaces as a woman. Printed into this work is the very clear message I have been given that I am not welcome. The connections between masculinity, fishing, and blue collar work in the south create a culture that often and openly objectifies women. I often pose to myself the question of how this culture has become so normalized. How is it that we can see boats named ‘Full Time Hooker,’ and bumper stickers with female silhouettes that read ‘dirty hooker’ all around us? I pose the question: Why are these references displayed as openly as carvings into an old wooden wall?
